H. Lee Hales
Lee Hales is a recognized authority on industrial facilities planning. His experience spans the full spectrum of planning, from site selection and planning to individual manufacturing cells and warehouse operations. During his 25 years of consulting experience, he has assisted with plant, warehouse, and office layouts, material-handling analysis, and information systems design. Mr. Hales’ assignments have taken him to more than 25 countries on six continents. Among his clients are: The Coca-Cola Company, Amazon, Caterpillar, Deere & Company, Clorox, Glaxo, Pepsi Cola, Ford, General Motors, Peterbilt and Kenworth Truck, Crown Equipment, Sony, Delta Air Lines, The Container Store, Lands’ End, and many more.
Mr. Hales has been teaching our full range of work courses since 1975. He has personally taught our planning methods to thousands of manufacturing and logistics personnel all over the world.
Lee Hales is the author and co-author of five books on industrial planning, including: Systematic Planning of Industrial Facilities, and the 4th edition of Systematic Layout Planning (both with Richard Muther). His other texts include: Computer-Aided Facilities Planning; CIMPLAN, The Systematic Approach to Factory Automation; and Planning Manufacturing Cells (with Bruce Andersen). He is also the author of two Video Series produced by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers: Fundamentals of Plant Layout and Fundamentals of Manufacturing Cell Planning. Mr. Hales has contributed chapters to McGraw-Hill’s Management Handbook for Plant Engineers and to Maynard’s Industrial Engineering Handbook. His articles and commentaries have appeared in such publications as: Material Handling Management, Warehousing Management, Manufacturing Engineering, IE Solutions, Plant Engineering, Building Design & Construction, Managing Automation, Computer Decisions, Modern Office Procedures, Nikkei Computer.
A senior member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, Mr. Hales is also past Director of the Facilities Planning & Design Division, and has served on the College-Industry Council for Material Handling Education. He is also a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Since 1992, Mr. Hales has served as Senior Lecturer for the Georgia Tech Supply Chain & Logistics Institute where he teaches courses on warehouse/distribution center layout and material handling.
Mr. Hales received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Kansas. He holds an M.S. in Management from the Sloan School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
